Six Days in One

In this post we are combining six days in one post while staying with my Dad and visiting my two sons and their families.

Enjoying Time with Dad

We arrived around 6pm last night so Wednesday was the first full day we had to spend with Dad.

It’s great to see him and to spend some time with him. The last time we saw him was when he visited us in the Bahamas for a month last November.

Bodies – The Exhibition – Niagara Falls

On Thursday we planned a trip to see “Bodies – The Exhibition – The Science Inside of You” in Niagara Falls.

This is a display of actual human bodies and organs in various types of dissections to show such things as muscles, internal organs, blood vessels and much, much more.

At first we thought we might have difficulty with this type of display. We were afraid it might be a bit gruesome. But, Dad had seen the exhibit before in Vancouver and said it was fascinating.

So, off we sent and we did find the exhibit interesting, educational and fascinating. The human body is truly amazing.

Actually, the only things that we thought were in poor taste were the photo they took of each group, photoshopped in one of the bodies and then offered the photos for sale and the gift shop had such things as a stuffed “Flesh Eating Disease” toy and leg bone swizzle sticks. Sorry, but that kind of thing is just gross!

Discount Shopping

Just around the corner from the exhibit was a discount outlet, so we also stopped in there.

Dad found a lovely bird feeder for his backyard and we got some small propane cylinders for our Coleman stove. The prices were not only good but they also included the taxes in the price. In my opinion, that’s a great way to price things.

Niagara Falls
Then we drove around Niagara Falls for a bit. We have all been to The Falls many, many times so we didn’t stay long as it was, as usual, quite crowded.

Unexpected Dental Work

After getting back it was time for Geoff to head off to the dentist. He had chipped his tooth the day before.

We just picked a dentist from a sign we drove by. I think, perhaps, we should have shopped around a bit.

For just 5 minutes to fix the chip – with no freezing – he was charged $140.44! And, they said they gave him a significant discount. This was just another one of those unexpected expenses that you can’t possibly plan for but have to find some way, on such a long to trip, to allow for such things in your budget.

Canadian Tire

When we were leaving the US we started having a little trouble with the transmission. It was having difficult changing from second to third gear. Having to fix a transmission could easily be a trip ending problem.

As the car needed another oil change, we took it to Canadian Tire and also had them do a road test on the car to evaluate the transmission.

When we picked it up they let us know they couldn’t find anything wrong with the transmission. Good news. Now let’s hope the car behaves. Perhaps it was just a little quirk. Here’s hoping.

Work Day

We decided that Friday needed to be a work day so we did our best to catch up on our posts and other stuff that just goes along with keeping up with life.

Mexican Train Dominos

During this week my Dad also introduced me to a game called Mexican Train Dominos. It’s really a lot of fun.

Try as I might, I have yet to beat him, but I did come close – once!

Visit to My Eldest Son and Family

Saturday we were off to visit my eldest son and his family which includes my grandson, my granddaughter and his lovely fiancé and their new home.

This was the first time we met his fiancé and what a lovely lady she is. She has three children – two boys and girl – who we’ll get to meet tomorrow at a bbq given by my other son and his family. More about that next.

Visit to My Second Son and Family

This son and his fiancé have just purchased a lovely house and are busy making it their home.

I was happy to see them both again as well as my grandchildren. Together they have five kids and only one of them was missing as he was working.

We were also able to meet my eldest’s son’s fiancé’s children and that was a pleasure, too.

All the kids played together amazingly well and enjoyed themselves immensely in the pool at T & F’s new house.

Our Last Day Here

On our last day here we had to take our car back to Canadian Tire because the “check engine” light was on.

They simply wanted too much to check for the reason and we’re sure there really isn’t anything wrong. It has probably just registered a miss-fire like the last time when we had the distributor cap replaced.

We did some more running around and topped off the evening with a lovely spaghetti dinner cooked by my Dad. He’s a wonderful cook and the spaghetti sauce was amazing.

It will be sad to leave tomorrow, but it’s time to get back on the road.

Thanks, Dad! Love you!

Thanks also to T&F and family and T&E and family for welcoming us into their homes. We love you all.

Heading Towards Southern Ontario

Today we continued on our way to my Dad’s in Grimsby, Ontario, not far from Niagara Falls.

As usual we let Madge, our Magellan GPS, lead the way – well, sort of.

Initially she had planned to take us across the border into Canada at Sault Ste. Marie. We didn’t want to cross there for a couple of reasons. First, we have driven that route many, many times. Second, we wanted to remain in the US because both the gas and accommodations are cheaper in the States and we had already decided that we were staying in a hotel for at least one night. I’m sorry, but Canadian hotels are just too expensive.

So, we gave Madge different instructions that would insure that we cross the border at Port Huron, keeping us in the US longer.

Minnesota to Wisconsin to Michigan

The route, therefore, took us from Minnesota, through a small section of Wisconsin and into Michigan.

In places the drive along the southern shore of Lake Superior was spectacular.

Marquette, Michigan

We arrived in Marquette, Michigan early in the evning and decided it was time to stop for the night.

Marquette Motor Lodge

We stopped at the Marquette Motor Lodge hoping that a small, family-run motel would be our least expensive option.

I believe that it was but it was still more than we had hoped to pay. But, being that it is now summer and Marquette is a tourist area, the best rate we could get was $59.95 taxes in. It was a queen-size bed and clean. A bonus was the terrific restaurant right next door.

Wahlstrom’s Restaurant

If you are ever in Marquette, Michigan you simply MUST stop at Wahlstrom’s Restaurant. Their daily special and homemade pies are simply out of this world!

For dinner I ordered a 1/4 chicken dinner and Geoff ordered a 1/2 chicken dinner – these were two of the daily dinner specials.

The dinners came with mashed potatoes (even these were special – red potatoes mashed with the skins on, a hint of onion and very creamy), steamed veggies (real veggies, too – carrots, broccoli and cauliflower – and still brightly colored and crisp), stuffing and gravy. Everything was simply delicious.

Total cost for such an amazing meal? Less than $20 for the both of us including the tip!

Although their pies looked absolutely amazing we simply didn’t have room for dessert. We were stuffed!

Now we just need to let dinner settle before we call it a night.

Combining Several Days

As you can see, we’ve decided to combine several days together in one post. This is the first time we’ve done this and it’s because we’re spending the week with my daughter and her family.

We may do this kind of combinations post again from time to time.

Having a Blast!

Having a blast pretty much sums up the week we’re spending with my daughter K and my granddaughters M & C.

We would also have loved to see my son-in-law W but being a long distance truck driver his schedule can’t always fit in things like this. But, there’s still a chance we may get to see him when we get to southern Ontario to visit my Dad, my two sons and my other grandchildren.

Whitesand Beach

One day we took the grandkids to Whitesand Beach not far from Schreiber. They had a great time and really didn’t want to leave when it was time to come home.

I’m afraid I didn’t go in at all. I just can’t take cold water anymore. But it was sure fun watching the kids enjoy themselves.

Schreiber Heritage Days

Although we are going to miss Schreiber’s Heritage Days celebration, I am sort-of getting to participate in one event with my daughter.

There is a “Biggest Loser” contest in conjunction with Heritage Days and K is part of a team.

She goes out walking twice a day, and exercises, too. She’s doing terrific and looks fabulous!

Since we’ve been here I’ve been joining her on her morning walks (I think she may be taking it easy on me), and Geoff and I have been taking their dog out for evening walks.

Thanks K for letting us stay with you. Love you!

Vicky’s Birthday
As we get older each birthday seems to be more and more traumatic as we realize how little time we have left to do all the things on our “Bucket List”.

Also the advancing years seem to affect each of us differently. Vicky has a youthful outlook and is a joy to be around. She is my best friend and I love her with all my heart – Happy Birthday.

Leaving Kenora
We have a long drive today as Vicky wants to get to Schreiber, Ontario where her daughter lives. We packed up as early as we could and went to McDonalds for breakfast to save a little time (Ugh!).

We did take half an hour to take a few photos before we left because Kenora and the Lake Of The Woods is a beautiful area and well worth visiting.

Thunder Bay
We drove right through to Thunder Bay and didn’t stop until we got to the Terry Fox memorial park where we had lunch.
If you don’t remember the story, Terry Fox was the one-legged cancer sufferer that tried to run all the way across Canada. He made it as far as Thunder Bay. Believe it or not that was in 1980, that’s 30 years ago.

Schreiber
We made it to Schreiber in time for supper and birthday cake that granddaughters M and C had decorated.

On the advice of the local fire department they had refrained from adding a candle for each year. Boy I’m in trouble now :-)

Long Drive

Today was a very, very long drive. I want to be at my daughter’s for my birthday – tomorrow – and that means we have to get all the way from Regina, Saskatchewan to Schreiber, Ontario in short order.

And, driving through the prairies, I’m sorry, is just plain BORING! It makes it hard to stay awake. The locals say they can watch their dog run away for three days.

Time Zones

I was so glad when we finally got to Northern Ontario and there were hills and trees and lakes. The roads were more interesting with their twists and turns and made it more enjoyable and easier to stay awake.

Hotels in Canada vs Hotels in the US

Because we were making such a long drive, we thought it would be nice to spend the night in a hotel, rather than have to pitch the tent only to take it down early the next morning.

Well, it seems like that won’t happen in Canada. The CHEAPEST hotel we could find would have cost us more than $100 for the night. Way out of our budget.

In the US it is not unusual to be able to find a small, clean hotel or motel along the highway for about $30 or $40 a night.

And the $100/night room was at an Econolodge! We stayed in one in Florida that was less than $50 for the night.

Hotel room prices in Canada are just ridiculously expensive.

Anicinabe Park

Right on the lake is Anicinabe Park, run by the Town of Kenora, and it has RV and tent sites.

It was way more reasonable than any hotel room we could hope to get but at $25.43 for the night, it certainly wasn’t one of the cheapest places we had stayed. It did, however, include flush toilets and hot showers at no extra charge.

Boston Pizza

Because we had resigned ourselves to camping for the night, we decided to treat ourselves to dinner.

A lot of the places in town seemed to be closed. Yes, it was a Sunday, but this is the beginning of tourist season, so I found that a bit strange.

Boston Pizza was open, though, and this was our first time eating at one. We had a Meateor Pizza (that’s right – lots of meat!). It was very good and very filling.

Wal-Mart Closing at 8pm?

After dinner we thought we spend some time browsing through the local Wal-Mart. Right after we got through the door we heard the announcement, “Greetings Wal-Mart shoppers. It is 8pm and Wal-Mart is now closed.” What?

Back to Anicinabe Park

So, it was back to the park to pitch the tent and get ready for bed. We’ve now got this pretty much down to a science, so the tent was up in less than half an hour.

We went for a little walk, headed back to our tent and watched a DVD on the computer before settling in for the night.
