What To Say?

The times that we spend several days in one place, particularly when we’re just relaxing and not sightseeing, are the times when we find it most difficult to do daily posts.

After all, how many ways can you say, “it was sunny” or “it was rainy”?

And, who wants to hear what you had for breakfast, lunch and dinner EVERY day?

More Liquid Sunshine

Today started very overcast which was actually kind of pleasant as the days that are really sunny can also be really hot!

Yes, I know, I’m complaining about the weather no matter what it is. Hey, I’m Canadian – it’s our job to complain about the weather. :-)

As the day progressed, though, the rain started – quite a lot of rain. By supper time it was pouring, which meant we couldn’t get out the Coleman stove or the JetBoil. So dinner was a couple of already cooked chicken breasts and salad. Actually, it was pretty good.

Stuff Getting Wet

As the rain continued we noticed we were getting little puddles of water on the tent floor.

We started moving the important stuff into the front of the car to keep it dry and putting down towels to soak up the water.

We were too late to save the cardboard box we were keeping our canned goods in but everything else fared pretty well.

Tim Horton’s Doughnut Shops in the US!

We have started noticing the presence of a lot of Tim Horton’s Doughnut Shops in the northern US states. Tim Horton’s is a Canadian chain started many, many years ago by the hockey player – you guessed it – Tim Horton!

You just can’t beat the doughnuts and coffee at Tim Horton’s.

Go Timmy’s!!!

It’s Summer and Hotels are EXPENSIVE!

During today’s drive we thought we might want to stay at a hotel if we could find a reasonable one.

We used Madge (our Magellan GPS) to show us the hotels that were along the way.

Not only were the prices high but most of the hotels we called were fully booked.

Yep, it must be summer.

St. Regis Campground

We had Madge (our Magellan GPS) find us a campground along the route as we figured that would be the only reasonably priced option for us for tonight.

We stopped at St. Regis Campground in Northern New York and it was reasonable – $20.00 – and gave us a chance to dry out our tent as we had had to pack it up wet.

Dinner was a bit of a challenge because, even though this campground had water and electricity available, there were no picnic tables.

So, Geoff set up the Coleman stove on the ground and we did the best we could.

Canned Chinese Food

Apparently I still haven’t learned about buying canned Chinese food. It always looks so good on the can and sounds delicious, but I’ve done this often enough to know that the results are not good.

However, we had bought two cans of Chinese food and I decided to cook one of them tonight. The results were predictable – disappointing.

Note to self: NEVER, NEVER buy canned Chinese food again.

Watching Movies on our Mac

Along the way, when there is nothing else to do in the evenings, we have started to watch movies on our Mac and that’s what we did tonight before drifting off to sleep.

Six Days in One

In this post we are combining six days in one post while staying with my Dad and visiting my two sons and their families.

Enjoying Time with Dad

We arrived around 6pm last night so Wednesday was the first full day we had to spend with Dad.

It’s great to see him and to spend some time with him. The last time we saw him was when he visited us in the Bahamas for a month last November.

Bodies – The Exhibition – Niagara Falls

On Thursday we planned a trip to see “Bodies – The Exhibition – The Science Inside of You” in Niagara Falls.

This is a display of actual human bodies and organs in various types of dissections to show such things as muscles, internal organs, blood vessels and much, much more.

At first we thought we might have difficulty with this type of display. We were afraid it might be a bit gruesome. But, Dad had seen the exhibit before in Vancouver and said it was fascinating.

So, off we sent and we did find the exhibit interesting, educational and fascinating. The human body is truly amazing.

Actually, the only things that we thought were in poor taste were the photo they took of each group, photoshopped in one of the bodies and then offered the photos for sale and the gift shop had such things as a stuffed “Flesh Eating Disease” toy and leg bone swizzle sticks. Sorry, but that kind of thing is just gross!

Discount Shopping

Just around the corner from the exhibit was a discount outlet, so we also stopped in there.

Dad found a lovely bird feeder for his backyard and we got some small propane cylinders for our Coleman stove. The prices were not only good but they also included the taxes in the price. In my opinion, that’s a great way to price things.

Niagara Falls
Then we drove around Niagara Falls for a bit. We have all been to The Falls many, many times so we didn’t stay long as it was, as usual, quite crowded.

Unexpected Dental Work

After getting back it was time for Geoff to head off to the dentist. He had chipped his tooth the day before.

We just picked a dentist from a sign we drove by. I think, perhaps, we should have shopped around a bit.

For just 5 minutes to fix the chip – with no freezing – he was charged $140.44! And, they said they gave him a significant discount. This was just another one of those unexpected expenses that you can’t possibly plan for but have to find some way, on such a long to trip, to allow for such things in your budget.

Canadian Tire

When we were leaving the US we started having a little trouble with the transmission. It was having difficult changing from second to third gear. Having to fix a transmission could easily be a trip ending problem.

As the car needed another oil change, we took it to Canadian Tire and also had them do a road test on the car to evaluate the transmission.

When we picked it up they let us know they couldn’t find anything wrong with the transmission. Good news. Now let’s hope the car behaves. Perhaps it was just a little quirk. Here’s hoping.

Work Day

We decided that Friday needed to be a work day so we did our best to catch up on our posts and other stuff that just goes along with keeping up with life.

Mexican Train Dominos

During this week my Dad also introduced me to a game called Mexican Train Dominos. It’s really a lot of fun.

Try as I might, I have yet to beat him, but I did come close – once!

Visit to My Eldest Son and Family

Saturday we were off to visit my eldest son and his family which includes my grandson, my granddaughter and his lovely fiancé and their new home.

This was the first time we met his fiancé and what a lovely lady she is. She has three children – two boys and girl – who we’ll get to meet tomorrow at a bbq given by my other son and his family. More about that next.

Visit to My Second Son and Family

This son and his fiancé have just purchased a lovely house and are busy making it their home.

I was happy to see them both again as well as my grandchildren. Together they have five kids and only one of them was missing as he was working.

We were also able to meet my eldest’s son’s fiancé’s children and that was a pleasure, too.

All the kids played together amazingly well and enjoyed themselves immensely in the pool at T & F’s new house.

Our Last Day Here

On our last day here we had to take our car back to Canadian Tire because the “check engine” light was on.

They simply wanted too much to check for the reason and we’re sure there really isn’t anything wrong. It has probably just registered a miss-fire like the last time when we had the distributor cap replaced.

We did some more running around and topped off the evening with a lovely spaghetti dinner cooked by my Dad. He’s a wonderful cook and the spaghetti sauce was amazing.

It will be sad to leave tomorrow, but it’s time to get back on the road.

Thanks, Dad! Love you!

Thanks also to T&F and family and T&E and family for welcoming us into their homes. We love you all.

Auto Club to the Rescue

Yes, we again had to call the auto club. This is becoming a habit.

It was my fault, really. We have a cooler that plugs into the power outlet in the car and we have been using the power outlet that works even when the car is off.

Apparently, last night, I forgot to unplug the cooler. The instructions say not to leave it plugged in, without the car running, for any more than 4 hours. Well, it was left plugged in all night.

So, needless to say, our battery was totally dead this morning.

Thank goodness for CAA. They showed up quickly, gave our battery a boost and all was well again.

Hopefully I will never again forget to unplug the cooler.

Birch Run Outlet Mall

The last time Geoff and I visited Flint, Michigan (well over 20 years ago) we spent time at an outlet mall.

I mean, how can you be this close to an outlet mall and not go? Come on – work with me on this!

Actually, we were in the market for a couple of backpacks for the European part of our trip so that was all the justification we needed to visit the outlet mall.

The North Face Outlet Store

As luck would have it we parked right near The North Face outlet store and so that was our first stop, knowing that they should have a decent selection of backpacks.

We weren’t disappointed by their selection, but, we were confused. There were so many styles and such a huge price range that we didn’t even know where to start.

Frank Coleman, the selling supervisor for this store, was very helpful and extremely knowledgeable. We told him how we planned to use the backpacks – basically as an easy way to carry our stuff as opposed to regular suitcases. We’re just not diehard hikers. We just want to be able to carry our luggage and still have our hands free.

He showed us several selections and narrowed it down to what was the most suitable.

Geoff got a Crestone 75 (it can hold up to 75 liters of stuff) with a good suspension system that he found very comfortable.

I got a Terra 60 (it can hold up to 60 liters of stuff) with an opti-fit suspension (it can be adjusted to fit short people like me for optimum comfort).

We also discovered that there was a sale on that would give us and additional 25% off the already discounted outlet pricing. It seemed like a no-brainer. Looking at the original pricing for each backpack, we actually got both backpacks for what we could have paid for just one of them.

However, I do believe the clincher was all the time Frank spent with us making sure we got the right backpacks and showing us how to adjust them.

Thanks Frank!

A&W Hamburgers for Lunch

While walking around the mall we picked up some coupons for A&W, so we decided to go there for lunch.

What a mistake. The burgers were horrible! Okay, they were pretty cheap but I do believe they were the worst burgers we have had – ever.

Sorry A&W, I used to love you when I was a teenager but I doubt we’ll ever be back.

Canada Customs and Immigration

After leaving the outlet mall we continued on to Port Huron and back into Canada.

The Canada Customs and Immigration officer was wonderful and welcomed us back to Canada.

We declared our newly purchased backpacks and he just waved us through.

Great to See my Dad Again

We arrived at my Dad’s at about 6pm. He had waited for us to arrive before making supper. He treated us to a terrific stir-fry dinner.

We are so looking forward to spending several days with him as well as seeing kids and grandkids while we’re here.

Econo Lodge in Dania Beach

Before embarking on our “official” trip we spent two days in the Econo Lodge in Dania Beach to give us a chance to get organized and get the car serviced. I guess those two days count as T minus 2 and T minus 1.

We got a really good deal on the stay as we have a Choice Privileges card and Econo Lodge is part of the group. We had earned a free night stay with our loyalty card and paid for the other night.

Although older, the motel was clean, the pool was great and the staff were friendly.

All-in-all it was a great deal for the money.
Mostly running around and shopping

Even though today is officially the first day of the trip, we still had a lot of running around to do and a lot of things to buy.

We made a final stop at our mail forwarding address to makes sure there wasn’t any more mail for us before we left.

The poor car just looked so packed full of stuff. Truly, we have yet to get organized but hope this process will happen along the way.

Thank goodness for our Magellan GPS. With a few minor exceptions it has guided us accurately to wherever we told it we wanted to go.

Recap of our equipment

So, let’s do a quick recap of what we’ve actually got with us for the trip. In order to save money and try to bring this adventure in on budget we plan to do some camping along the way.

Now, there’s a real leap of faith. I haven’t camped in more years than I care to admit to and the same goes for Geoff. But, we tried to select the equipment we would need logically. We’ll see how that works out.

What we have for the trip:

*Koolatron cooler – that’s the type that can be either hot or cold and plugs into your cigarette lighter or power outlet in your car/RV.

*Sportz SUV Tent – this tent actually attaches to the back of your SUV giving you way more space with the tent and SUV combined. We’re traveling in a 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee, so this kind of tent seemed ideal for us. (More about setting it up later)

*Truckbedz – we opted for an inflatable mattress that was designed to fit the back of the Jeep. It inflates and deflates quickly and this also meant that we wouldn’t have to sleep on the ground – something I particularly didn’t want to do.

*Jetboil Helios cooking system – this was purchased with an eye to both size and convenience. Reviews on this system also seemed pretty good. (More later about cooking our first supper with this system)

These were the main purchases. Other items that were, of course, needed were dishes, cutlery, cooking utensils and the usual stuff like paper towels, etc.

A Car Full of Food

One of the toughest things was keeping down the amount of food we were purchasing. For one thing, food is very expensive in the Bahamas, so everything looked like such a good deal. However, the cooler and car will only hold so much. We had to be really conservative on anything that needed refrigeration.

Our first grocery shopping trip was to Costco. Now that was really difficult because of the sizes normally sold there. We did buy some stuff but not nearly as much as a normal Costco trip. Costco has always been an outing for us and it’s just amazing how much will just jump in the cart. However, we exercised surprising restraint and only bought things like canned chili and packets of soup in a bowl. One of the best things we got were salt and pepper grinders all ready full of sea salt and peppercorns – can’t be without our salt and pepper.

Just before getting to our camping spot for the night we stopped at a Wal-Mart Super Center to pick up just a few more items. We got a set of Coleman dishes and cutlery so we actually had something to eat dinner on, as well as a few utensils like a spatula and the always-essential can opener.

With the car now bulging (and I thought I may have heard a few groans as well), we headed to Lake Como Resort to camp for the night. This meant setting up the tent for the first time, inflating the mattress for the first time and using the Jetboil system for the first time. That’s a lot of firsts for people our age.

After finding our campsite we began the process of figuring out the tent. We opened it up, checked all the parts we had and began to read the instructions. I guess we looked a little perplexed as a neighbor came by to ask if we needed any help. He had noticed us poring over the instruction booklet.

In a bit the methodology became clear and we started to assembly the tent and attach it to the car. As with anything new, once you’ve got it figured out subsequent attempts become easier.

Then our thoughts turned to dinner. Geoff set up the Jetboil, and they sure named this product right. We were having spaghetti and meat sauce for dinner and we began boiling the water for the spaghetti which, amazingly, only took a minute or two to boil. When it was ready we took that off the burned and cooked the ground beef and then added the spaghetti sauce that also cooked in record time.

It was a bit awkward but everything came out great and we enjoyed spaghetti and meat sauce as well as salad and garlic bread for dinner. Not bad for our first camping meal.

It was now time to think about heading off to bed for the night in our new tent. At this point we began to question if we wanted to sleep in the back of the car, which seemed like it would be cramped. Remember, we’re used to sleeping in a king-size bed. So, we decided to inflate the mattress and just lay it on the floor of the tent. Well, as I mentioned earlier, it was specifically made to fit in the back of the car, so it has a rather odd shape. We made a valiant attempt to sleep on this hourglass-shaped mattress on the bottom of the tent, but neither of us could sleep because we kept falling off the edge of the mattress.

About 2am Geoff suggested that we put the mattress in the back of the Jeep where it was meant to be in the first place. So that’s what we did and you know what, because we had the sides of the car to lean against and we weren’t falling off the edges of the mattress, we actually felt like we had more room and were able to get a reasonable amount of sleep.

After our first day of camping I’m pleased to say that we are still married, still talking to each other and both without any major injury. Not bad! Now on to day two …
